A Universal Bias Towards Positivity.
/I just read about a fascinating study on the Physics aeXiv Blog from the Computational Story Lab at the University of Vermont. The study looked at the frequency of positive and negative words in 24 languages from cultures around the world, and what the authors found is that “the words of natural human language possess a universal positivity bias.” There are an array of interesting findings in this study, including the fact that all of the languages studied show a bias towards positive words. Further, the authors looked at things like comparisons between the same words in different languages and "how the emotional polarity changes in novels." They have even provided a tool on their site for people to explore the positive and negative words in a range of novels for themselves. This is really interesting research and I hope you will take a look. I also hope that after you do, you will come back here, and share your thoughts on the Comments section below.
