Positive Change Through Adversity?

There is a new piece in Science 2.0 titled "Posttraumatic Growth: Addiction as an Opportunity for Positive Change" which discusses what growth after addiction looks like. The piece describes how trauma divides people into two groups, those who experience posttraumatic stress and those who experience growth. The implications, are that "With the right help, the addicted person has the potential to reconstruct a version of their self that is more compassionate, centered, wiser and better than they were before." Which is not to imply that people should seek addiction, but it raises some interesting questions, and possibilities, for those who are addicted.
